Mariah Carey is one of those do-it-all success stories. The 37 year old is a singer, actress, song writer, record producer, and music video director all wrapped into one. As you can imagine, this means that Mariah Carey is a very busy person. But at the same time, all of these different titles have brought a lot of fame and fortune to her life. And it is safe to say that she would not want to have it any other way. Mariah is currently number 6 on the top 20 richest women in the entertainment business list. She’s worth an estimated $225 million.
In 1990, Mariah Carey released her debut album under the direction of Columbia Records. It is a little known fact that she was the first musician to have each of her first five singles climb to number one in the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart. Even though Mariah had a lot of success with her first album, which was self titled, she did not stop there. In fact, Billboard magazine has noted repeatedly that Mariah was the most successful musician of the 1990’s. If you think about all of the competition during this decade it is easy to see just how big of an accomplishment this was.
By 2001 Mariah Carey’s career was taking a downward turn. This led her to leave Columbia Records, and eventually sign with Virgin Records; this deal did not last long. In 2002, she signed with Island Records, and in no time at all Carey was back to the forefront of the industry.
At the 2000 World Music Awards, Carey was named the best selling female pop artist of the millennium.
In addition to selling millions of albums worldwide which have netted her big time money, Mariah Carey has also acted in several different television shows and movies. In the 1999 move The Bachelor, Mariah made her big screen debut as an opera singer. Her first starring role came in the 2001 film, Glitter.
Mariah Carey has been one of the biggest names in the music industry since breaking onto the scene in 1990. Even though her career sputtered a bit after her success in the 90’s, Mariah Carey is back on track.
